Australia likely to head to a double dissolution election on 2 July

With the Senate voting down the ABCC legislation 36 votes to 34, Australia is likely to head to a double dissolution election on 2 July. Jacqui Lambie, Glenn Lazarus, Ricky Muir and John Madigan sided with Labor and the Greens to provide the Prime Minister with the trigger. The PM has repeatedly vowed to use the ABCC legislation if rejected as a trigger to call an early election.

Although the Prime Minister has his triggers, he is unlikely to visit the Governor General before Scott Morrison delivers what will need to be an election saving budget on 3 May. With the polls putting Labor back in the game, an unprecedented 75 day campaign awaits….game on.
